Carl likes big band because you’re “getting a lot of music from a relatively small group”.  With his many years of experience it makes him an ideal assistant director.  He can work with all the brass teaching them more professional approach to their instruments.  Carl finished college and has dual degrees: a BA and BS.  The BS comes in most handy when working with younger musicians.  Carl says “I’ve been lucky enough to play and work with some greats: Toshika Akiyoshi, Louis Bellson, Don Menza, Bill Watrous, Rod Rodney, plus three local symphonies, pit orchestra work, the Navy Band and touring with a rock band.  Now I prefer teaching”.

His advice to younger musicians just starting out: Get a good teacher, play as much as possible in a broad variety of styles and settings, and be patient!  Music takes time and practice.  It’s obvious that Carl follows his own advice when you listen to him play or teach a section or rehearse the band.  The Jazz Ensemble owes this man much and he is a valuable asset to the younger musicians in the group.
