Favorite music, groups, composers and artists: “I like just about everything.  Stravinsky, Mahler, Tchaikovsky, Radishead, Imogene Heap Muse, Miles Davis, Don Ellis.

Matt says that “there is much better interaction in jazz than in orchestra.  It’s like chamber music but not as uptight.”  It is Matt’s aspiration to be a professional composer and as such live, breathe, eat and sleep music!  Anyone who knows Matt knows that he is already doing just that!  His compositions are amazing and already this young man is being watched closely by some of the world’s greatest composers.  They know he is a true up and coming star!  His latest big band composition “Black Dahlia” is a work of art.  Listen for it being performed by the Jazz Ensemble in one of their many concerts.  During Christmas Holidays the Jazz Ensemble premiered his composition “Blue Eyes” and it brought the house down with Matt playing the trombone solo in this remarkable work.  He even has the attention of the Basie Band and their director Bill Hughes.

Matt was principal trombone in the San Diego Youth Symphony for three years, in the San Diego Philharmonia for two years and in the preparatory orchestra before that.  His advice to a younger musician just starting out is “get yourself a good teacher and ask a lot of stupid questions.  Drain them of every ounce of knowledge”.  He also says; “come visit me in Cleveland!”
