Nickname: The
real Matt Smith Matt likes big band jazz because “everyone is important to one awesome sound. With this band in particular the great friendship everyone has with each other.” He describes himself as “a nice kid who wears a checkered hat. I don’t like cocky people”. Matt has received the John Phillip Sousa Award and the Louis Armstrong Jazz Award. His teachers that influenced him are Mr. Kent and Bob Campbell. His most memorable performance was playing with “The Aquabats” at Soma San Diego in front of 1000 people. His advice to a young musicians just starting out is “practice, be and don’t be cocky or have a bad attitude because nobody likes that. Get good at reading because in every single audition that will put you apart from the rest!” “I don’t care what horn you have, if you don’t play it well it doesn’t matter to me anyways!” Check out Matt’s SKA band “The Skank Agents” at http://www.myspace.com/theskankagents The band is sometimes called “The Matt Smith Jazz Ensemble” because it was the brainchild of this remarkable talent. Matt wanted to play big band jazz but had no opportunity available to him. So being the young genius he is he just started his own. In speaking with Matt about the bands upcoming trip to the Monterey Jazz Festival he commented: “I didn’t think it would get past the first rehearsal and here it is going to Monterey”! All we can say to that is thanks Matt Smith. |
