Michael say’s big band “swings like no other!”  “I am an easy going guy with mocha colored skin, mid-length dark brown hair and stunningly well groomed fingernails.”  Michael also possesses a great wit.  He was the recipient of the full ride UCSD Jazz Camp Scholarship in 2007 and the Coronado Jazzfest Soloist Award with the Jazz Xpress in 2006.  He was awarded the Bertram Turetzky award from UCSD Music Department in 2008.  He has studied with greats Tom Ervin, Scott Kyle and Sean Reusch.  He has performed with the Jazz Xpress, the Jazz Ensemble, San Diego Youth Symphony, the La Jolla Symphony and with the funk/rock group the 5PQ.

Michael’s advice to another young musician just starting out: “Practice and study with a good teacher, practice transcribing, playing by ear and record yourself.”

Jamey Aebersold's Jazz Handbook.  There's a lot of information in here and it is all very helpful.  The first four or so sections are particularly important if you don't want to get overloaded with too much information.
