Ray says: “I like the sound of the big band.  It’s hard to find many good jazz trombonists and the big band is a good way to hear excellent trombone playing.  When asked where he plans to attend college Ray responds “no idea”!  This young artist who maintains a 3.9 GPA will be going to college that is for sure.  Ray has a taste for clothes that most people wouldn’t wear, especially fur and he likes creating black and white prints in his darkroom.  He says “I love steam engines and someday I want to build or restore a steam tractor.

Ray was a member of the 2008 Grossmont District Honor Band.  Ray is in the Grossmont High School Jazz band and the Grossmont High School Wind Ensemble as a bass trombone player.   “Brandon Jagow was the assistant director at Grossmont High School my freshman year and he got me interested in playing jazz and helped me develop my technical and stylistic skills.  Andrew Doskin’s skill on the bass trombone inspired me to play”.  His advice to a younger musician just starting out is “as a beginner your horn and equipment aren’t as important.  You don’t need a professional horn unless you can play at a professional caliber” He thanks Scott Wood for inviting him to play with the Jazz Ensemble and his extraordinary talent got him invited back to become a regular.
