When discussing playing with a big band Skylar says “I love the energy and dynamic nature of the charts.  Also improvisation is one of my favorite parts of existence, and as a bassist I get to do that a lot.”  His college options are still open but rest assured this honor student will chose wisely.  He likes “music, activism, architecture, reading, learning things, art, theater, las chica’s, travel, sleeping and being awake.”  His dislikes are “Materialism, flakey people, Kenny G, people who can’t chill, people who can’t swing, temperatures above 85 degrees F and closed minded people.”

In 2007 Skylar was given a full scholarship to the UCSD Summer Jazz Program.  He also received an Outstanding Musicianship Award at the Coronado JazzFest in 2007.  His advice to another young musician just starting out is: “study jazz, there in lie the keys to being a bitchin’ musician.

Skylar says The Jazz Ensemble is one of the best groups he has ever played with.  It is the opinion of The Jazz Ensemble that Skylar is one of the best musicians they have ever worked with.
